FORTY-THREE

To DI Henderson, Peter Nugent looked as though he had enjoyed a good holiday. He was tanned and more relaxed in the chair than someone should have been when sitting in a police interview room.

‘Good morning, Mr Nugent. I am Detective Inspector Henderson and this is Detective Sergeant Walters. We are members of the team investigating the murder last week of Lily Osborne.’

‘I know, it’s been in all the papers here and the one I saw in Spain. I would have called, but I only saw it yesterday and thought it better I come in.’

‘I’m glad you did. What do you do?’

‘I’m a financial advisor at Alexander Young. I live in Brighton but work in London. We advise private investors about shares, unit trusts and pensions. That sort of thing.’

‘Why were you in Brighton town centre a week last Sunday night?’

‘Me and my mates are tight, you know? We go to the pub together, watch football at my house, that sort of thing. In fact, I would rather have gone on holiday with them than Sue, my girlfriend, and her mother. Sue’s all right, but her mother gave me bloody earache with all her bitching.’

‘Tell me about Sunday evening.’

‘The four of us had a few drinks, it was Jamie’s birthday, then went for pizza. We came out of the restaurant and went into a pub. We had a drink there and then walked down North Street, heading for that pub at the start of the Lanes, you know, The Pump House?’

Henderson nodded.

He was trying to determine how reliable Nugent’s information would be. It was hard enough for witnesses to be accurate when they were sober, never mind with several drinks inside them.

‘How much had you had to drink at this stage?’

‘I was taking it easy; I was due to get up at five the following morning for the flight. I tell you, it’s no joke making your way through a crowded airport and getting on a plane with a bad hangover. I’ve been there a few times and I don’t want to repeat it.’

‘Take a guess; how much would you say?’

He thought for a moment.

Nugent was smartly dressed in a dark suit and tie, his hair short, and lacking the facial hair that adorned the appearances of so many young men. He was clearly doing well at his job, if the gold watch on his wrist was anything to go by. In a way, it reminded him of estate agent Sol Nathaniel, Lily’s ex-boyfriend.

‘I would think about two pints and a large glass of wine.’

‘Is that a lot or a little for you?’

‘I don’t often mix wine and beer, so if I’m sticking to beer I can drink about five or six pints and still find my way home, and with wine, about half- to three-quarters of a bottle.’

‘Okay, so you and your mates were walking down North Street?’

‘Yeah, the four of us turned into East Street, where the taxis are, and we saw this good-looking bird, I mean, woman standing there.
